Over the last few months, I've been trying a few different types of (mostly) drugstore skincare produtcts. I started out with some suggestions from the book “The Youth Equation: Take 10 Years Off Your Face” by Jeffrey Dover and Cara Birnbaum.
Dr. Dover is a big proponent of Retin-A, which I already slather on every evening. He listed high end and drugstore products that he likes. I decided to go the budget route and sampled some more affordable products. Here’s what I tried:
Aveeno Active Naturals Positively Ageless Lifting & Firming Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 - This was so stinky and perfumed that I only used it once. The fragrance never faded and I so it went back to Fred Meyer, never to be purchased again.
Olay Total Effects Eye Transforming Cream – Very thick and moisturizing. It did not mess up my eye-makeup application and I was bummed when I ran out of it. I would buy it again.
Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser Normal to Oily Skin – I already use this and I really like it. It has a light fragrance, lathers well, doesn’t make my eyes tear up, gets rid of make-up (even mascara) and it’s cheap! There are also generic versions at Target and Walgreen’s.
I was having so much fun trying new products that I decided to keep on going. So I decided to try a bunch of products that were not from the book, but that I had read about in magazines or just sounded good to me.
I gave these a shot:
Aveeno Active Naturals Positively Ageless Firming Eye Cream – It stinks a little bit, the moisturizing power was adequate, but not fantastic. It didn’t really seem worth $22 after tax (at Fred Meyer – I see it’s cheaper on Drugstore.com), so I returned it.
Olay Definity Correcting Protective Lotion with SPF 15 --- This was so very stinky and heavily perfumed that I could not use it (My Mom had this – I gave it back to her.)
Neutrogena Moisture Oil Free Formula SPF 15 – This is your basic moisturizer. It barely smells at all, but doesn’t have that chemical “unscented” smell. It does make skin a bit shiny (nothing a little loose powder can’t fix). I always buy this and always come back to it. It’s very affordable and it does the job.
Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar – This soap smells nice, lathers well, it’s not too drying, but gets make-up off without stripping your skin. It’s also very cheap – I would buy it again.
Biore Nourish Moisture Lotion SPF 15 – This has a very nice floral smell that fades after you put it on. Light moisture, but I would like it more if it was a bit more hydrating. (It was Aaron’s face lotion, so I sampled a bit. Hey, even guys can have dry skin!)
Biore SkinPreservation See the Future Fortifying Eye Cream – This eye cream has a light smell that is not offensive and goes away after a few minutes. It’s hydrating without being greasy. My eye make-up goes on nicely over this cream. I would buy it again.
Aveda All Sensitive Moisturizer - I got this as a sample from a friend. It's got a hippie kind of scent that reminds me of the scent of olive oil. It's ok, but I kept feeling like I needed to put on more. It wasn't really hydrating enough for me. I wouldn't buy it. I will use it up as hand cream, though.
Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer SPF 45 – This stuff is very thick and has a strong sunscreen smell. It seems oily, but then doesn’t seem hydrating enough after it sinks in. My nose started to get dry and peely after I used it for a while. I gave it to my Mom to try. I wouldn’t buy it again.
None of these products made me break out. However, after all this testing, my nose and chin are peeling to the beat the band. I decided some gentle exfoliation with a wash cloth might do the trick. However, that just left my chin raw and red. Ouch. So, I pulled out the big guns (after remembering Tyra going bananas on her show – girlfriend is cuckoo) and resorted to Vaseline.
Yes, I put Vaseline on my chin. I know. I can’t believe it either. It seems to be helping, though, and (knock on wood) I haven’t broken out yet. Right now, I’m using regular Cetaphil, the Neutrogena SPF 15 Moisture lotion and the Biore eye cream. I’m hoping things get back to normal soon. At least I'm not rolling around on the floor screaming about Vaseline while wearing capri pajamas. It could be worse.
