Rediscovering old make-up

Do you ever get a new make-up product, try it out, think it's just so-so and then put it away, thinking you might use it again "someday"? I try to return things that don't just blow my socks off, but you can't return a sample, so I tend to keep those the for perfect someday, when I am inspired to try them out again.

A lot of times, these cast aside products never find a second life in my everyday make-up basket. But every now and then I rediscover a product and think, "This stuff is pretty freakin' awesome, why didn't I like it before?" This most recently happened to me with a Tarte Lock and Roll Creaseless Eyeshadow Duo in rose gold.

Daisymayrobin got it as a sample at Sephora and gave it to me. I never turn down free make-up, so I gladly took it and tucked it away in my purse.

The first few times I used it, I tried the roller ball end.

It is filled with a champagne colored powder shadow that you just roll on, like those old school rollerball lipglosses of yore. It gave a sheer application, but the roller felt kind of weird on my eyelid. I tried the liquid/cream end, which is a darker coppery-gold color. I had a hard time applying it with the brush that is built into the cap. Frustrated, I put it away, thinking I might try it again when I had more time.

Then I promptly forgot about it, until a few weeks ago, when I wanted to go make-up shopping, but decided that I needed to save some coin. So, I went "shopping" in my make-up drawer of cast-offs. I found the Tarte eyeshadow and remembered that when I was at the Trish counter a while ago, the make-up artist applied cream shadow with a brush.

She just swiped some product off the built-in applicator onto a nice eyeshadow brush. So I tried that with the cream shadow side of the Tarte product. Hot damn! I had way better control and was able to just get the color on my lid and not up on my brow bone, thus avoiding the disco ball look that wouldn't be acceptable at work.

So, now, I really like the Tarte cream eyeshadow! It goes on easily with my MAC 213 eyeshadow brush, stays put and doesn't rain down errant eyeshadow particles on my lower eyelid. And it was FREE! Happy day!
