Hyphen

You know what really pisses me off? Hyphenated last names. I mean, shit or get off the pot. If you don't want to lose your maiden name, then keep it. That's totally cool. If you want to change your last name to your husband's name, then do it. (You can even bitch about going to the DMV, if you want. I know I did.) But don't waffle around in the middle with a name like "Kendall-Popodoplous". I swear to God. Think of the children. There was this poor kid that my brother went to school with and his last name was Thayer-Snyder. Can you imagine spelling that out all the time? No? Neither could his teacher or any of his classmates. Everyone called him Chris T.S.

I think hyphenated last names are pretentious and really, what does it accomplish? Because your husband isn't going to change his name to a hyphenated last night name, right? And if he did, would it be Popodopolous-Kendall? So your last names still aren't the same because his is just going to stay Popodopolous (or Green or Brown or whatever his last name is). So you have succeeded at nothing. So there.

(And, one last thing, even the word "hyphen" is annoying. It's like Stephen with a "ph". Hmph.)

Yikes! Did someone have a bad morning?

But, I do agree with you. I liked hyphenated names in the 80s and early 90s when women were coming into their own. But now, women can simply keep their name or take a new one, so yes, sh*t or get off the pot.

BTW, how do you feel about merged names, like, Hildefish? : )

Yeah, I was a little grumpy yesterday. I had a case of the Mondays. :-)

Merged names are amsusing - kind of like Bennifer or Brangelina. Hildefish is cute! I like it. Ours would be Nielmohr or Mohrsen. Not too shabby.
