New Year's

For New Year's this year, Aaron and I are helping to plan a par-tay at a friend's house. Over drinks a few weeks ago, the idea for an 80s prom themed new year's party was tossed around and a fantastic plan was born.

I did a bit of research on the internets, though, and saw that we're not the first ones to think up such a party theme. No sir, it appears that Ashley Simpson had a similar themed party for her birthday. And, if you do an image search for "80s prom" on Google, you come up with more theme party pics than actual pictures from someone that attended a prom sometime between 1980 and 1989. But, no matter, that didn't stop us from going out and buying some lovely party attire.

Aaron is shooting to look like Ducky from "Pretty in Pink", so he'll be a nu waver (hard to believe John Cryer is in "Two and half Men" now).

I, on the other hand, am going for more of a buttrock/suburban mall girl look. (Think Poison meets Debbie Gibson.) I bought the most hideous purple velvet and tulle prom dress with puffy sleeves at Value Village, some purple pumps and the Goodwill and a lot of awful accessories at Claire's. It's a bit odd when you can just sashay into your local tween jewelry store and stock up on what I would call horrid plastic eighties crap, but it made things easier, so I won't look a gift horse in the mouth. (And, yes, of course I plant to curl my bangs up and wear a hair clip with a purple bow - by the way, anyone out there own a hair crimper?)

Aaron's going to spin records (all the soundtracks - "Pretty in Pink", "Weird Science", "Ghostbusters" - as well as other gems like "Heart and Soul" by T'Pau and "Breakout" by Swing Out Sister and, of course, classics like "Wake me up before you go-go" by Wham), there will be snacks and drinkies and there will even be a wall of shame. That's right, people are supposed to bring pictures of their own prom. I found pictures from both of my proms. Good times.

There will be photo ops left, right and center. And probably some safety dancing, too.
