Now that it's getting to be summer, it's time for some lighter reading. If you don't want to read a bunch of overrated crap like "The Nanny Diaries", then check out anything by Laurie Notaro. I read a review in Bust magazine about her book "The Idiot Girls' Action Adventure Club" (Bust has excellent book picks) not too long ago. The book was so hysterical, that I subsequently scarfed up the other two books she had written: "I Love Everyboday (and Other Atrocious Lies) and "Autobiography of a Fat Bride".She writes short essays about her life and all the mundane, yet hilarious things that happen to her. Things like having "Chub Rub" rash, which is caused by sweating and having your legs rub together (I have that problem, too, but I just never had a name for it). She also talks about being stuck in an airport waiting area next to a Japanese girls' basketball team who are doing hand clap games with a matching song that goes "HODI, HODI, HODI" over and over.
I am currently reading her latest book, "We Thought You Would Be Prettier" and it's making me laugh so hard that my eyes are watering...and I'm not wearing waterproof mascara! (Because getting that stuff off is like unsticking melted tar from your eyelids.)
My only advice is not to read any of Ms. Notaro's books in public, unless you're ok with people thinking that your giggling is caused by the use of "medicinal" marijuana or that you are just slightly insane. (Which might be a good tactic if you ride the bus and want the seat to yourself.)
