Nail Buffer vs. Neutrogena Instant Nail Enhancer

I read a beauty tip in Self (or was in Instyle?) about a new product by Neutrogena that would provide a "one minute manicure". Curious, I read further. The product is Neutrogena's Instant Nail Enhancer. It sounded like you just brushed on this wonderous substance and your nails would be tranformed in, well, an instant.

Deciding to put it to the test, I went to Walgreen's and bought the nail enhancer AND a nail buffer, similar to this one, so that I could compare the results.

I buffed away with the nail buffer until my nails were free of ridges and sported a high shine. Beautiful. It only took me about 15 minutes and was easy enough to do while watching tv. (I can't stop watching "Entourage"!)

The next morning, I uncapped the Instant Nail Enhancer (I chose the Healthy Buff Sheen variety, because I figured it would be shinier, but you can also choose Pearl Sheen), and painted away. It has a brush tip like nail polish and has a bit of a chemical smell that fades when it dries. It dries almost instantly (hence the name) and left my nails looking even shinier. I thought, "Where have you been all my life?"

However, after a few hours at work doing normal things (reaching into my pocket for my keys, typing, writing, picking up the phone) I noticed that the shiny coating had spots that were wearing off. As the day progressed, the nail enhancer started to rub off like rubber cement until I was just left with no coating at all. Crap.

So, in the nail buffing smackdown, the actual nail buffer is the reigning winner. It takes a bit more effort, but the results are long lasting and natural looking (and the nail buffer itself was only $2.99, compared to $7.99 for the instant nail enhancer).

I'll be returning my Neutrogena Instant Nail Enhancer to Walgreen's post haste.
