I was flipping between "Designed to Sell" and "Shear Genius" last night. Since the former is only a half hour, I ended up watching about three hours of "Shear Genius". (That Bravo really knows how to suck you in! They cunningly air two repeats of the program right before they show the new episode at 10pm. Shrewd, very shrewd.) I, of course, was so captivated, that I barely had time to make snide Kmart jokes about Jaclyn Smith. (Does she still have a clothing line at Kmart you ask? Why, yes. Yes, she does.) Part of the reason that I find "Shear Genius" so appealing is because I can relate to it. I know what it feels like to be sitting in that chair with a hopeful stylist inches from my face as I try not to break down in tears. (Flash to the last time I ever went to a budget hair salon...I still cringe whenever I see a Supercuts.) I also know what it feels like to have that spring in your step after you get the best haircut ever! (I'm the king of the world!)
It's also fascinating to see how 12 (or 11 or 10, as they get eliminated) people interpret a hairstyle. I couldn't believe the variation on the "Sally Shag Challenge"! (And, is it just me, of does Sally Hershberger totally freak the pee out of you, too? I wouldn't let her near me any sharp objects. "What? You want to go platinum blonde? That's not possible! NO PLATINUM FOR YOU!" Gouges my eyes out with a rusty rat tail comb.) I mean, it really goes to show that you're not losing your shit when you explain what you want to your hairstylist and they execute it completely differently than what you intended. (I don't have this problem with my current stylist, however - she is super fantastic.) Because even after Sally showed them how to cut the shag on a real person moments before the challenge, they still all ended up with different interpretations.
So, I, for one, am waiting with baited breath for the next episode!
And, coincidentally, I have a hair appointment next Saturday with my lovely stylist and I am totally looking forward to talking with her about this show!!
