Fantastic Florida

We left for Florida last Tuesday night (we thought a red eye would be a great way to save time, but in reality, it was quite beastly. No sleep on the plane all night makes for feeling pretty crappy.)

We arrived early Wednesday morning and then took a lengthy nap. Wednesday afternoon, we swam in the small pool by Aaron's parent's condo. As I jumped in the pool, my little niece splashed toward me and yelled, "Cover your boobs!" I looked down furtively, but the girls were safely covered. Kids say the darnedest things...

Thursday, we went to the beach, which was absolutely gorgeous!

To get to the beach, we rode a little tram down a wooden boardwalk. There were signs that suggested not feeding the gators in the swampy area under the boardwalk, but we didn't see any.

The beach was sandy and we had comfy chairs to lounge in while we weren't swimming.

The weather was rather toasty, though, and even with my best sun protection efforts, I managed to get a sunburn on my shoulders and the tops of my feet. Ouch!

Friday, we went to the Naples Zoo. We saw Siberian tigers, lions, antelope, zebras, and some alligators, but the coolest part was Monkey Island. At the zoo, all the monkeys live on small islands in a man-made pond. Water is a natural "fence" for monkeys, since they will not swim across it.

To see the monkeys, you ride a small boat and a zoo guide drives the boat by each island and tells you about the different monkeys. It was awesome! We saw lemurs, spider monkeys, and this guy with his fabulous white tail:

Saturday, we went to the big pool in the condo complex. It had lawn chairs and a shady tented area, which is perfect for those fair skinned folks, like myself. While in the pool, playing with the kids, I wore my swimsuit, t-shirt, sunglasses and my straw cowboy hat. I probably looked pretty special, but I avoided getting sunburned again.
Saturday night, we went to the boardwalk at a different beach and watched the sunset.

Then we went out for ice cream to have an early celebration for our oldest niece, who turned the ripe old age of five.

It was a good visit and gave us a chance to catch up with Aaron's family and indulge in going out to eat a lot. We also got some quality time with our nieces and nephew. It was pretty cool to be called "Aunt Cathy".

Sunday, our plane left at 6:45am, so we had to get up "at the ass crack of dawn", as my brother would say. We made it back to Seattle by 1pm on Sunday afternoon, and then putted home from the airport in the Benzie.

It's fun to travel to new places and we had a great visit, but I'm always happy to come home to Seattle - rain and all!
