Funny Ha Ha

If you began reading any of the books recommended in yesterday's post, I hope that you didn't off yourself as a result of their depressing content. In an effort not to be a total downer, I am going to try to buoy your spirits by listing some of my favorite humor writers.

The humor writers that I appreciate most will probably not be a surprise to most of you. You already knew that I am in love with Amy Sedaris and Laurie Notaro. Read anything by these ladies and you will not be disappointed. And, better still, did you know that Laurie Notaro has a new book called "There's a (Slight) Chance I Might Be Going to Hell: A Novel of Sewer Pipes, Pageant Queens and Big Trouble"? It's coming out on May 29th, and I can't wait!

David Sedaris and Dave Barry are my two favorite male humor writers. Everyone loves David Sedaris, but have you read "Holidays on Ice: Stories"? The best story in the book is the one where he writes about his experience of being an elf at Macy's. It doesn't even have to be close to Christmas to enjoy that one.

Dave Barry has quite a catalog of books, but my top pick would have to be "Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs". It's a quick read (like one to two hours), but it will most definitely leave you laughing out loud (see how easy that was to type - no need to type "LOL" - I will personally break the fingers of anyone who types "LOL" to me in an email) and gasping for air. He lampoons such classic songs as "Feelings" and "I Write the Songs" (did you know that Barry Manilow actually didn't write that song?). He also helpfully groups songs into categories like, "Teenage Death Songs" and "Songs Women Hate" ("Take a Letter, Maria" is in this category.) It's a great book and will most certainly improve your mood.

Two funny books that I am currently reading are "Confessions of a Recovering Slut: And Other Love Stories" by Hollis Gillespie (which is a book of short, humorous essays about Hollis' life) and "The Gallery of Regrettable Foods" by James Lileks (which is a book of gross pictures of food from different decades with his amusing observations about said food).

It's a little harder to find books that make me laugh, but when I do, I take note. And then I giggle to myself and people move away from me.

I'm so glad to hear you still love Dave Barry. I have fond memories of listening to you laugh hysterically to yourself while reading his stuff. You're right, I would have moved away had we been in public...good friend that I am. May as well let a girl enjoy her Dave Barry on her own, eh?

Yeah, I still have the "Dave Barry's Guide to Guys" book that you gave for xmas of 1995! That was a really funny one, too.

I know, I'm lucky that you didn't have the men in white coats come and take me away to the funny farm! I just can't stop laughing once I start. It's a blessing and a curse. :-)
