Pillager's Pub

Aaron and I went to Pillager's Pub last weekend to see what it's like. We wandered in at about 8:30pm and easily found a table. Most of the tables are like picnic tables with matching benches. There are a few smaller tables with chairs near the fireplace. We pulled up a bench and settled in.

As I looked around, I noticed a big mural on the wall of a pirate ship on the ocean that was painted on the back wall. Faux fishing nets and skulls decorate the bar area to add to the pillaging pirate theme.

Our server brought us a beer menu

and a food menu.

We didn't order anything to eat, but we did each order a beer.

I had the Baron Pilsner and Aaron has the Baron Schwarzbier Black Lager. Both were quite good.

However, we only had one beer each. I couldn't put my finger on it, but the Pillager's Pub just seemed like it was missing something. Maybe they need more decoration or something to make it feel less like an old Tully's. And they definitely need to get dimmers for the lights. If there's one thing that makes me want to flee a bar, it's bright lighting. Also, I don't like not having a cheap beer alternative. All the beers on their menu are microbrews - no PBR in sight.

Even though Pillager's Pub didn't wow me, I do hope that they continue to evolve and become a place that we want to go on a more regular basis. They are less than a block away from us and that is definitely stumbling distance.

And if the owners read Yelp at all, they will see that a lot of people had similar, erm, constructive criticism. So perhaps they'll take that to heart.

We'll probably give them another try in a month or so and hopefully they'll have the kinks worked out by then.
