Rimmel

I was searching for a new mascara because I noticed my Maybelline Great Lash was creeping into my lower lash line and generally making a smeary mess. I looked at Beauty Addict's Encyclopedia of Mascara for inspiration. She didn't have Fiberwig or Too Faced Lash Injection listed, but she did say that Dior Show isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Armed with a shiny new gift card, I boldy marched into Sephora in search of the perfect mascara. I looked at the big display and checked out the Fiberwig. It actually has hairy little fibers built into the formula. I tried a Loreal thickening mascara that had those fibers, too, and didn't have good luck with it. It flaked off onto my face and irritated my eyes. So, instead, I tried a mini size Too Face Lash Injection. It is supposed to form "tubes" around your lashes to maximize fullness and length.

I zoomed home, uwrapped the protective plastic packaging and swept it onto my eyelashes. It turned into a clumpy, crunchy disaster right off the bat. I had to work fast to comb it out with a clean mascara wand before it dried. I thought it might be ok, but as the day wore on, tiny bits cracked off into my eyes. When I washed it off, it just washed off as normal and I didn't see evidence of any tubes. (I've read the the tubes slide off your lashes with soap and water.) Sadly, I had to return the Too Faced mascara.

Frustrated, I checked Beauty Addict's list again. I saw that she had favorably reviewed Rimmel Lycra Lash Extender mascara.

Rimmel? I thought to myself, that's not high end. But, it was only about $6 at Walgreen's (and I see it's even less now!), so I gave it a try. And, I'm happy to report that I actually like it! It's stays put and does build volume and length. I wouldn't say that it curls my lashes much, but my lashes are pretty straight to begin with. It doesn't create spider lashes or flake and it's cheap! I do wipe the wand off with a tissue before applying it, so that definitely decreases the clumpage. (I remember that tip in a Cindy Crawford beauty book that I read in the '90s.)

So, for now, Rimmel Lycra Lash Extender is my go-to mascara. I am a fickle pickle, though, that could change. I will alert you if that situtation occurs, of course.

I've been meaning to leave a comment now that I'm wearing eye makeup... I have a favorite mascara.

Per Collin's advice, I was using Prescriptives Falsh Eyelashes Mascara, but it comes out on the wand super clumpy and is hard to put on. So, I went back to a mascara I bought on a whim last winter with help from a sales girl at the downtown Sephora.

Sue Levett's Microquatic Luxury Lash (Black Widow) Mascara is the bomb! The wand comes out clean and beautiful everytime, and it takes so little to make my lashes a million miles long without a clump in sight.

A quick search on sephora.com shows they don't carry it anymore, which freaks me out... but a Google search shows beauty.com carries it. At $22 a pop, it's not cheap, but it has lasted me quite awhile, so I think it's worth the price.

Good to know! I'm always on the lookout for good mascara. I haven't tried any of Sue Devitt's products, but I saw she had some eyeliner on QVC. I got totally sucked in and almost bought some, but then it sold out. I really love mascara, though. I feel naked without it.
