Hyphens Revisited

So, I have to ask a question. If a man with a hyphenated name (like, let's say Dewy-Cheathan) gets married and his new wife wants to hyphenate her name (let's say her last name is Smith - I'm feeling uninspired), which names does she choose? Does she have a double hyphenated name? Like would it be Dewy-Cheathan-Smith? Dear God, that sounds like a law firm! Or would she just take her husband's hypenated name of Dewy-Cheathan? Or would she put her name first, so it would be Smith-Dewy-Cheathan? It just blows my mind. These are the types of brain boggling questions I like to put out there for those people with time to mull over deeps thoughts. Or, if you happen to be allowed to have TWO POUNDS of medical marijuana per 60 day period (not that there's anything wrong with that), you might want to think about these sorts name/hyphen conundrums. Or you might just want to eat a family size tub of mini cream puffs from Costco. It's your call.

Where does the man fall in this equation? Maybe the new bride should ask him to dump one of his two names. : ) Or, the obvious: keep your name as-is! (Get it? I just used a hyphen.)

That is an excellent question! Because if she took his name and hyphenated it with hers, their last names still wouldn't be the same, unless he took a triple hyphenated last name, too. And then what if they had kids? Oh, lord. They need to think of the children.

PRECISELY the reason I did not hyphenate my child's name!! I spent a fair amount of time pondering this very question while pregnant...and that was without the assistance of two pounds of anything but baby fat.

i've never been a fan of the hyphenated name. it just sounds pretentious to me. i did a lot of thinking about the name-switching when we got married. should i, shouldn't i, does it make me "kept" haha. but finally i decided, well, if we do have kids that would mean that we'd have to hyphenate, or that we'd have to decide what to name the kid. and let's face it, i wanted a new signature!

i agree with all you guys! i was struggling with the name thing when i got married, too. but let's face it, my maiden name was hard to spell, so at least aaron's last name is shorter and it totally avoids the whole hyphen issue. thank god! and we probably won't have kids, but at least if we get a dog, it won't have a hyphenated last name. and let's face it, there is nothing more pretentious than a dog named "muffin dewy-cheathan".
