Over the weekend, Aaron and I went to check out the Yen Wor Garden (formerly the China Jade). It's right down the street from the Baranof, so we knew it would be either cheesy good or cheesy bad. Sadly, it was the latter. The lounge area is separated from the restaurant. They have karaoke seven nights a week, which is even too much for me, and I like karaoke. The space is L-shaped, with the bar and the seating area on one side and a pool table on the other side. The decor looks like something you'd find in an old sports bar...complete with cheap wooden tables and chairs, Bud lite advertising tents on the tables, and green patterned carpet from the 80s. (And not in a retro cool way.) The karaoke system was good and the drink pours were stiff, but the clientele seemed to be displaced from somewhere like Lynnwood. (I have actually gone out for drinks in Lynnwood, so trust me on this one.)
The songs that were picked during our brief stay were, "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath, "Hate Myself For Loving You" by Joan Jett, and "Riders on the Storm" by Johnny Cash.
We had been hoping for a laid back bar like the lounge in the Moon Temple, which is a Chinese restaurant in Wallingford. But no such luck. Aaron observed that karaoke seems to be all we can find in Greenwood. Unless we want to go to the Crosswalk (Looks like they need some photos on their site!). And I'm not sure I'm that desperate yet.
