We went to Feierabend on Saturday as planned. My Mom had to take a raincheck so it was just Aaron and me. We ended up getting there early enough to hit up the happy hour (or "Glueckliche Stunde" if you spreche the Deutsch), which runs from 3pm to 6pm daily. I ordered the Currywurst sandwich with Pommes Frites for $6 off the happy hour menu and Aaron had the stuffed portobello mushroom, green salad and Spaetzle, for $12 off the main menu.I thought the bratwurst and the fries were very tasty, but the roll that the bratwurst came on was more of a French bread variety. When I lived in Germany, the bratwurst always came on a "Broetchen" or small white roll, so that was one thing I would have done differently.
Aaron liked his meal, but wasn't over the moon. It's probably not the best place to go if you're a vegetarian, since German food is heavy on the meat.
We both had beers, of course. Aaron had the Dinkel Acker Dunkel and I had the Franziskaner Weissbier. Word to the wise, though, only "selected" beers are discounted by a buck during happy hour. Both of our choices ended up being full price ($5 for a half liter). Next time, I will ask my server and find out the happy hour beer of the day before making my selection.
The atmosphere of Feierabend is lively, with brick red walls and mustard colored accent walls. The tables are picnic style, like you might find at a German beer garden. The hanging light fixtures are wrought iron and look like something you would see at a small German Gasthaus. There is also a splash of Northwest style thrown in, because the space has very high ceilings and exposed air ducts, which seems to be a trend at lots of restaurants around Seattle. The bottom line is that Feierabend won't transport you to Deutschland, but it will give you a bit of German flavor with the design and decor of this small "Kneipe" (bar).
I will definitely go back to Feierabend, because I want to try their Wienerschnitzel and a different type of bratwurst that comes on Landbrot (dark brown bread). If you're not into German fare, however, you would be best to stick to a soft pretzel or the french fries from the happy hour menu and toss back a few more cold brews with your extra scheckels. Prost!
