Country Boys

After watching hours of crappy tv yesterday (yes, I'm still sick, in case you want to send me a get well card or something), my eyes were glazed over from too much "Inside Edition". So when Aaron got home, I handed him the remote. And we stumbled upon something good, but we weren't sure what it was.

It was a show about some high school kids and their families and it was set someplace out in the sticks in the South. The focal point was on two boys: Chris and Cody. They showed them with their friends, showed them going to church, and it showed Chris' trailer. They all had thick southern accents and we guessed that they lived in West Virginia, but we weren't sure. (We finally figured out that they live in the Appalachians in Kentucky.)

This show was like good reality tv, or like a "documentary", as we called it in my day. After logging onto PBS, we figured out the program is called "Country Boys" and is a three-part documentary series by David Sutherland in connection with Frontline.

The next installment is on next Wednesday at 8pm, or you can watch them all online.

Even though the people in this documentary would certainly fall into the category of "white trash", you are not shown a quick caricature of a hick, like you might see on "The Simple Life". You see the boys develop over a time period from 1999-2002 and get to understand their motivations and see the obstacles they must overcome.

I'm not saying that I'd like to pack up and move to Appalachia. And I have to admit, I rolled my eyes and snickered when they showed Cody practicing in his Christian heavy metal band. (What is it with Chrisitian rock bands? It always makes me think of Stryper.) But, if you like documentaries, I would recommend checking it out. I know I'll be tuning in next Wednesdsay for Part II.

Thank you! Aaron has been doing a really good job. He brought me chicken soup and an Odwalla C monster yesterday, so he got a gold star for that. :-) I hope to be on the mend post haste!
