Have you ever noticed how a lot of people say, "Absolutely", to answer a question instead of just simply saying, "Yes"? Maybe it's because it makes your answer sound more credible, or "absoute" as the case may be.
I noticed this when I was watching Oprah a few weeks ago. (Yes, I watch Oprah. Shuddup.) One of her guests was a former crack whore and Oprah's team had filmed a day in the life of a crack whore so that we, the viewing audience, could see what that's like. When Oprah was interviewing her guest, you could tell she was still cracked out (the whore, not Oprah), but when Oprah asked her a question, like, "Do you think you'll be able to stay off crack?", her guest would say, "Absolutely" and nod her head and fidget around.
If you watch Oprah enough, (I tune in for choice episodes, like the one about swingers, who were very unattractive for people that swap sex partners), you'll notice that a vast majority of her guests, will say, "Absolutely" for an affirmative response. And it does sound better than, "Yep", "Sho' nuff", "You bet", or , "Uh huh.".
So, I think I'm going to start saying it, too. Would you like another cupcake? Absolutely. Would you like a Grey Goose vodka tonic? Absolutely. Would you like to retire early and spend your remaining days buying handbags? Absolutely - that would be fabulous!
Try it for yourself and see if it works for you. But don't blame me if you end up on Oprah.

Oh my god, I work with someone that says this all the time.
Yeah, I think it's a word best used sparingly. It's funny to notice how often people say it instead of just, "yes", though.
