We discovered a diamond in the rough on Saturday...otherwise known as The Baranof. After an evening of birthday celebration and housewarming revelry, we felt it was time to explore the neighborhood (and hopefully avoid annoying our neighbors) so we eased on down the road. A friend of ours had recommended that we check out The Baranof, and described the bar as a dark, windowless space where time stopped. We were curious to see it for ourselves, and so were our guests.
To get to the bar, you have to walk through the restaurant. The bar has a ship motif with fish netting on the walls and other marine decorations. As we entered, we were greeted with the warbling of karaoke! Jackpot! After settling in with drinks all around, daisymayrobin and I decided to sign up for a song. Various artists' names were thrown around - Bonnie Tyler, The Spice Girls (it was unanimous that I'd be Posh - and, well, we do use the same MAC Lipglass) and Madonna, for instance - but in the end, we decided on "Bust a Move" by Young MC.
Lil' Kim will be fearing no competition from me as a fierce female rapper, because I was completely out of breath about sixty seconds into the song. Thankfully, we got some back-up dancing support from one of our friends as we shrieked, "You want it, you got it! You want it, baby you got it! Break it down for me!" and we shook it like were auditioning to be dancers in the Fly Girls.
It was quite an evening and was capped off by all the power going out on the entire block as we left. I was afraid that maybe time HAD stopped, but then the street lights jolted back on and we went on our merry way.
Next up will the China Jade around the corner. It looks like a hard-drinking bar/Chinese restaurant, but I'm game.
