Tag Sale

In addition to their regular weekly sales, the Goodwill discounts multiple colored tags on most major holidays. My Mom and I try to hit these sales whenever we can.

The most recent sale was for Memorial Day...green tags were 99 cents and all other colored tags were 40% off (not including collectibles or new merchandise). We rolled in on that Monday at about 9am (they open at 8am) and started shopping.

There are specific things that I look for when shopping the Goodwill: dishes (like cool barware or serving ware), necklaces, purses (obviously), shoes and clothes (Old Navy/Gap/etc and also vintage, which is rare.) My Mom shops for all those same things, but she is also very interested in the furniture section. (I have found some furniture there on occasion.)

On our last excursion, I found this charming serving dish!

It appears that this piece is Japanese.

I love the simple design.

This lovely dish had a red tag, so it was 40% off of $3.99. What a steal!

Shopping at the Goodwill does take time and perserverance (we were there for three hours on our last visit), but a sharp eye and a bit of patience always pays off in the end.

(On a side note, I also make lots of material donations to the Goodwill, so my cold, stingy soul will hopefully not end up in a firey hell for being a miser and a cheapskate.)

What a gorgeous, graphic dish! How big is it?

When we cleaned out my grandmother's house in 2002, we found a lot of kitchen items that were made in Japan. So weird nowadays with everything made in China, etc., that "made in Japan" may have been what you bought for (I assume) reasonably priced and beautiful wares!

Way cool! I'm glad you were able to give it a good home.

Thanks, guys! I was pretty excited when I saw it! It's about 11 inches by 8 inches. You'll get to see it in person next time we have people over - I just haven't decided what to put in it yet...

And, yes, it is weird that stuff made in Japan back in the day is similar to made in China items now - for all I know, this dish could have been from Woolworth's originally!
