Have you seen those crossing flags they have at some intersections?
I pulled one out of the bucket on Greenwood and waved it around as Aaron and I crossed the street this evening. (I should have done the Safety Dance, but it only just occurred me. Although, it might not be wise to look at your hands and then clap while holding a flag and trying to get across the street.)
It reminded me of when I was in gradeschool in Olympia. Not because we did the Safety Dance, but because at Lincoln Elementary, all the 5th graders got to take turns being crossing guards before and after school. It was awesome. I liked Washington Street the best because it was medium busy with foot traffic, so you didn't have to work too hard, but you didn't just stand there for no reason. Capitol Way was a very busy main road that lots of kids needed to get across and Franklin Street was a really boring not highly travelled side street. We got to wear safety vests and held out red flags that said, "STOP" in white letters when people crossed the street. Those were the days.
The crossing flags on Greenwood are safe and fun, but what happens if all the flags are in the bucket on the opposite side from where you need to cross? The horror!! Let's just hope that never happens. I've got my fingers crossed.
