Ice, Ice, Baby

Toward the middle of the cruise, we sailed through Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. (Sorry for the cheesy post title - anytime I hear the word "ice", I automatically think of Vanilla Ice. It's an affliction. Also, when anyone says, "If you got a problem", my brain adds, "Yo, I'll solve it." I just can't help it.) Anyway, Glacier Bay, as you can imangine, is filled with glaciers. It was absolutely breathtaking!

As we were sailing into Glacier Bay, the scenery was stunning.

As we got further into the bay, we noticed bits of ice in the water.

When chunks of ice fall off the glacier, it's called "calving". We didn't get to see this happen, but there was lots of ice floating around. As you can tell by using the boat in the picture above for reference, some of the ice pieces were pretty large.

The glaciers also push silt into the water, which is why it turns that beautiful green color.

We saw Margerie Glacier and Lampugh Glacier. They are are enormous!

We were told that some of the glaciers are as high as a 25-story building.

They were also a gorgeous color of blue.

I had never seen glaciers before, so it was amazing to see them in person.

I was surprised our ship was able to get so close, but the water must have been very deep.

We spent quite a while in the bay, so that everyone could get a chance to take lots of pictures and get a good view. It was awesome! And, yes, it was very, very cold. Brrrrrr!
