Gordito's

Aaron and I went to Gordito's the other night, in an effort to break the monotony of winter. Gordito's is located down the street and around the corner, so it is definitely within walking distance. They tout themselves as having "healthy Mexican food", which means they don't use lard in their beans and they don't make their rice with chicken stock, so it is suitable for vegetarians.

I have ordered a variety of items there. My favorite, so far, are their chicken tacos. You can get your choice of meat (beef, chicken or pork). The tacos also have have lettuce and jack cheese topped onto two white corn tortillas. One order is more than enough and it is only $2.65! I usually get sour cream on the side. (Full disclosure ahead...and I sometimes smuggle in Taco Bell mild sauce to spice things up.)

I've also ordered their nachos, burritos (which are the size of my upper arm), pork tacos and rice and beans. They are all ok, but I have to admit that the beans and rice are a bit flat. I must be missing the lard. Gordito's also gives you homemade chips and salsa, which are delish.

The decor is casual and the staff are very friendly. They play jaunty Mexican music and have a nice patio out back to enjoy in the summer. Check them out the next time you're feeling like a cheap and tasty meal. The bright and happy atmosphere might even help you temporarily shake your case of SAD (season affective disorder) during the dark winter months in Seattle.

I love their giant burritos and I can never eat the whole thing in just one meal. The place always has a line of people waiting outside in the summer.

I know! The burritos are big enough for a family of four...but they're really good!
