Giggles

We went to Giggles Comedy Club on Saturday night for a friend's birthday. I had never been there before, so I was curious to see what it would be like.

The show we attended started at 10pm and ended at about 11:30pm. When you go in, they have a ticket area (a guy behind a podium with a cash register) where you pay (our show was $13) and then there is a bar area to your right. The bar has railing dividers to corral people in line, kind of like at Wendy's. There was a one drink minimum and the drinks were $4, so we got a couple vodka tonics and went on our merry way.

Beyond the bar was a door to the comedy club area. Inside the comedy club, there was a small stage with an exposed brick wall behind it, just like at the beginning of Seinfeld when Jerry did his routine. We found a long table with room for everyone where were could all see, but that wasn't too close to the stage to avoid being singled out and embarrassed.

They had four "warm-up" comedians before the headliner. The warm-up guys were all varying degrees of funny. One guy sang amusing songs with an accoustic guitar like Jimmy Fallon or Adam Sandler. One of the other warm-up guys was from Bellingham and told humorous stories about his roommates. The unfortunate thing was that each warm-up guy got only about five minutes and the main guy got an hour.

It was unfortunate because the headliner guy wasn't that funny. His name was Brett J and he seemed like he was trying to be Eddie Murphy, but he wasn't cutting it. He told a lot of jokes involving marijuana and "titties".

Overall, it wasn't my bag. But it was pretty full of people, so I think a lot of people must like it. A lot of people were laughing, too, so they either thought it was entertaining, or they didn't want an uncomfortable silence for the performers.

In future, however, I would only go to a comedy club again if I was familiar with the comedian and knew they was a good chance that their routine would be funny. That said, it always nice to try something new and I think the birthday girl had a great night!
