With my trusty new queue, I picked the movie "Born into Brothels". I had been waiting with anticipation to see it, and was very excited when it came in the mail. I expected it to be a gritty expose of the Red Light District in Calcutta, India.
Wrong answer. The film was actually about this woman, Zana Briski (who is British) and her sidekick, Ross Kauffman, who went to Calcutta and ended up teaching a small group of children (whose parents worked as prostitutes and drug dealers in the Red Light District, although we see little of them) the finer points of photgraphy.
As the movie unfolds, you see that in addition to teaching the kids how to take moving photos, Zana also tries to get them the right documentation to get out of the slums and go to boarding school, which is really difficult and challenging, blah, blah, blah. She is very annoying, so it's hard to appreciate the help she is giving the kids.
Anyway, I was kind of pissed off before I watched the movie (wedding stress), but after the film, I was spitting mad. In addition to Zana being narcissistic and irritating, there were huge portions that weren't translated from Bengali to English. It was so frustrating. They had whole segments of the kids speaking directly to the camera, but NONE OF IT WAS SUBTITLED!
Aaron suggested maybe I just give up and watch "Con Air", which he just received as his pick from out queue, but instead I went to bed after crashing around in the kitchen for effect.
